Fri. Nov 18, 2011 Weather update

Friday, November 18th, 2011

Zinda FitzGerald, our Head of School, has provided the following update with respect to the current weather situation and afternoon classes.

The decision has been made to keep all students at the school this afternoon instead of sending them out to different locations for their Exploratory courses (Grades 5 to 9) due to the current weather and possible driving conditions.

We are not closing the school at this time; however, we are aware that some parents may want to come and collect their children throughout the afternoon.  They will need to sign out at the front office if they do this so that we can ensure we have an accurate accounting of all students who remain in the school.

For those students who are driving themselves, we are asking students to first contact their parents to determine if it’s safe for them to drive themselves home before leaving the school and to provide that confirmation to the school staff.

After School Care will not be available after 4 pm today so we ask parent to please ensure they pick up their children by 4 pm.

Please be cautious on the roads today, the conditions are extremely slippery and it will take some time before road crews will be able to salt/sand all of the roads.  It is our hope that most main roads will be in better shape by dismissal time today.

Cedar House Day today!

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

All student members of Cedar House had reason to celebrate today as the day was dedicated to their House Team!  All Cedar House members could replace their usual uniform dress today with clothes depicting their House colour (yellow).  Parents generously donated ‘yellow’ foods/snacks for students to enjoy during lunchbreak and high school Cedar House Captains and members decorated the halls in Cedar House style!

Junior Girls Volleyball Team have a great season!

Monday, November 14th, 2011

This year our Junior Girls Volleyball team participated in the School District League.  Playing in the ‘Districts’ meant that they got to play at least one league game a week.  This, combined with the decision to rent the gym at Oliver Woods once a week, meant that our girls were well prepared for the season.

The first tournament of the season was the VIU tournament.  This was familiar territory for the team as a lot of the girls had completed the VIU training camp.  The next tournament was at Brentwood and with it came the first big win of the season: the girls managed to defeat Brentwood on their home turf!

The highlight of the year (other than soundly beating the teachers during a lunch hour game) came during the School District Year End Tournament.  On a Friday night 85 fans turned out to watch the girls defeat Wellington in 2 straight games.

Our community is very proud of these girls who have stuck together and trained hard for a number of years.  All their hard work is certainly starting to pay off!

Happy Hallowe’en!

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Aspengrove families got into the spirit of Hallowe’en a little early this year with some fine carving of pumpkins, courtesy of several dozen pumpkins being donated by Beach Acres Resort in Parksville.

The Jack-o-lanterns will be lit and on display, nightly, at Beach Acres Resort until Hallowe’en.

Today was very eventful and started with the whole school, including many parents, attending morning assembly.  MC’d by 3 of our Grade 4 students, we had many students perform and make announcements, as usual.  We were also surprised with some Hallowe’en entertainment by none other than the band ‘Staff Infection’ whose members are faculty members of the school.  Everyone had a great time and got into the spirit of the day!  Today it was cool to be a ghoul!
