Experience tells us at Aspengrove that the Middle Years Program (MYP – grades 6-10) helps prepare students for high school and for university. It’s one of the (many) reasons we offer the MYP! Still, it’s always nice when we receive some external validation for the program such as that recently found in a few studies whose results were shared with us.

One finding is from a US-based study called A comparison of MYP and non-MYP students’ participation and performance in high school. Here are links to the summary and full report. For students who take Advanced Placement (AP) and Diploma Program (DP) exams in high school, this study shows that those with MYP experience are more likely to earn a score on their exams showing readiness for post-secondary studies:

Another finding (below) is from a study in the Asia-Pacific region called The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP): Comparing IB Diploma Programme outcomes of students who complete the MYP and other middle years courses of study. Here’s the summary and full report. It showed that MYP students earn high overall DP scores than students who weren’t first prepared through the MYP. It should be noted that 30+ is a fine DP score and students who join us in grades 11 & 12 receive the support that they need to succeed! But it also underlines the quality of the MYP as a program – something we certainly agree with.
