INTERNATIONAL ADMISSIONS

ASPENGROVE SCHOOL

Aspengrove welcomes students from around the globe who have the potential to be successful in our International Baccalaureate Program and are eager to contribute to the life of the school.

A challenging academic program combined with a diverse program of co-curricular activities and the opportunity to be immersed in the local culture are among the reasons that students come to Aspengrove School for their education.

Aspengrove has 300 students in total, with the size to do all that a large school can take on – from sports teams to school musicals – yet small enough that every teacher knows your name and every student feels part of a small family. Our setting is rural, with a 40-acre campus of trees and trails, yet we sit just across the highway from an urban setting.

PREPARATION FOR UNIVERSITY

As only one of twelve schools in Canada authorized to offer the complete International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum from JK-3 to Grade 12 our students graduate well-prepared to attend the university of their choice. Students are offered support in their application process whether they are planning to attend university in Canada, the United States or around the world.

Not every student will go to Harvard, but universities will notice if you take IB:

“Success in an IB program correlates well with success at Harvard. We are always pleased to see the credentials of the IB Diploma Program on the transcript.”

–Marilyn McGrath Lewis, Asst. Dean of Admissions Harvard University

Read the following article for more on how the IB program is the ideal preparation for university.

English Language Learners

Support is available for students who do not speak English as a first language.  Ideally applicants to Grades 10 to 12 have spent time studying in English in an English-speaking country.

As part of the Admissions Process, students requiring ELL support will be assessed to determine their readiness to be successful in our program. Upon acceptance, an English proficiency test will be administered to determine the appropriate level of support required.

Why Canada?

Canada’s reputation is known around the world. One of the safest, most liveable countries, Canada is respected for not only accepting but embracing other cultures and a variety of beliefs. We will share our culture with you but we also look forward to learning from you.

Our education system is world class with degrees and diplomas recognized around the world. Whether you want to study business in the United States, medicine in the United Kingdom or stay right here in Canada – our top universities consistently rank amongst the very best in the world and Aspengrove students are accepted to them each year – you’ll be ready when you complete high school in Canada.

Aspengrove School, in particular, is committed to the prestigious and challenging International Baccalaureate curriculum. You’ll be well-prepared for university; indeed, you should enter university with many credits, possibly a full year, already earned.

We are located on the West Coast of Canada. The most well-known city nearby is Vancouver, host of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Many people imagine Canada as cold. But our part of Canada has a milder climate than places you imagine in North America like New York, Chicago, Boston, Montreal, Toronto and many, many more well-known cities. In those great cities you’ll face harsh winters but here on the West Coast of Canada we almost never see snow! The average temperature in winter is 9-degrees celsius. But you are still closeby to enjoy popular winter sports, for the mountains are not far away, while being able to enjoy a day on the ocean even in winter.

ABOUT NANAIMO

Nanaimo is located in Central Vancouver Island. It sits at the hub between Vancouver, the spectacular west coast resort of Tofino, ski destinations to the north and Victoria to the South. It is an ideal destination to explore all of the finest the West Coast of Canada has to offer.

Nanaimo, British Columbia has a Mediterranean climate with warm dry summers and mild winters. One of the warmest places in Canada we have an average temperature in summer of 21°C and 9°C in winter. It rarely snows and rainfall is far less than Vancouver, BC, or Seattle, WA.

With a population of 80,000, Nanaimo is a small, extremely safe community where students have access to all the recreational facilities of a large city, shopping, and restaurants, and only a brief 15-minute flight or ferry ride to Vancouver. In fact, Aspengrove is far closer to Vancouver or Whistler than any other independent school on Vancouver Island.
