Middle Years Programme
In students’ formative years, the curriculum focuses on academic challenges and life skills. Intercultural awareness plays a major role. This programme also encourages students as they develop a personal value system to live by in their local communities and the larger world.
A day in the life of an MYP Student
A day in the life of a Middle Years Programme student varies from grade to grade, with experiences such as inspiring leadership and volunteer opportunities with local charities and organizations, to exciting outdoor education experiences such as kayaking the ocean surrounding Vancouver Island, hiking some of the Island’s well known peaks, and multiple day camping trips in remote locations!
Our Middle Years Programme strives to make every day at school an inspiring experience to encourage students to engage deeply in their learning, helping to build a strong foundation for their future and produce life long learners. Our goal is to help students find the best in themselves so that they will go on to make a difference in the world.
Students in the Middle Years Programme travel in homeroom groups for much of their school day and receive subject instruction by specialist teachers. Regular homework is assigned, consisting of specific assignments as well as regular study. Formal exams in the core academic subjects begin in Grade 6 and take place mid-year (February) and at year-end (June).

MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME MODEL
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. The curriculum framework is comprised of eight subject groups, which provides students with a broad and balanced education.
At Aspengrove School, the Middle Years Programme aims to develop active learners and internationally-minded individuals that empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning.
The MYP empowers students to inquire into a wide range of issues and ideas of significance locally, nationally, and globally. The result is young individuals who are creative, critical, and reflective thinkers!
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a five-year programme, which can be implemented in a partnership between schools, or in several abbreviated (two, three or four year) formats. Students who complete the MYP are well-prepared to undertake the IB Diploma Programme (DP).
The MYP requires at least 50 hours of teaching time for each subject group, in each year of the programme. In the final two years of the programme, carefully-defined subject group flexibility allows students to meet local requirements and personal learning goals.

In our Arts programme, students will develop through creating, performing, and presenting arts in ways that both engage and convey feelings, experiences and ideas.
At Aspengrove School, our Middle Years Programme is focused on a holistic design process rather than final products.
Individuals & Societies
Individuals and Societies for our Middle Years Programme students incorporate disciplines studied in humanities disciplines from the social sciences, focusing on real-world examples, research, and analysis is an essential aspect of the subject group.
Language Acquisition provides students with the opportunity to learn multiple languages, developing insights into the features, processes, and craft of language and the concept of culture.
Language & Literature
The Language & Literature programme focuses on listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and presenting.
Physical & Health Education
Physical and health education focuses on both learning about and learning through physical activity. The courses encourage students to engage in physical education activities for at least half of the total teaching time allocated to the subject group.
In the Middle Years Sciences Programme, students are encouraged to investigate issues through research, observation and experimentation, working independently and collaboratively.
QUALITY ASSURANCE AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Any school, or group of schools, wishing to offer one or more International Baccalaureate programmes as an IB World School must first be authorized. The requirements are the same for all schools, and the procedure is designed to ensure that schools are well prepared to implement the programme(s) successfully. All IB World Schools are required to participate in an ongoing process of review and development, using the same programme standards and practices.
As part of its ongoing commitment to the development of a highly skilled global learning community, the IB provides a wide range of high-quality professional development opportunities to help new, experienced and expert school leaders and educators understand, support, and successfully deliver IB programmes reflecting IB standards and practices.
Aspengrove fully supports its faculty in a continuing programme of professional development within the IB framework. Our faculty are committed to this programme, investing considerable time each year both in and out of regular school hours.
