Building on SuccessOur New Athletic & Activity Centre
Aspengrove first opened its doors in 2003 in a small building with just 42 students. It was through the dedication and philanthropy of Aspengrove families that our current location in Lantzville was purchased, and our school has been able to grow to 300 students.
As an independent, not-for-profit school, we rely on philanthropy to offer enriched programs for our students. Tuition and government grants cover salaries and daily operations. Philanthropy enables us to strengthen and enrich the educational experiences for our students, from Junior Kindergarten through to Grade 12.
From our humble beginnings, we are where we are today because of the generosity of time and donations of Aspengrove families. Our students benefit from this generosity every day.
“The vision of Aspengrove School has been a journey of passion and great satisfaction. We continue to donate because we believe our contribution will make a difference in the lives of students in our community. And from our humble beginnings, Aspengrove has graduated students to whom we provide the tools to follow their own dreams and passion, and if we are true to our guiding principles, then so shall the cycle continue to the next generation!”

Athletic & Activity Centre Capital Campaign
We are thrilled to have completed our first-ever permanent building at Aspengrove School, which opened in the spring of 2020. Over and again, our students, parents, and teachers have asked for improved athletic and performing arts opportunities, and the facilities to support them.
We are currently outgrowing our sprung gym. We run PE classes, graduation, performances and theatre productions in local facilities off campus. The added pressure and cost of moving students, teachers, parents and equipment to other locations is becoming less and less sustainable as we grow our programs.
What does that look like? Building strong and permanent school spaces that bring to life the transformational teaching and learning environment that defines an Aspengrove School education, now and for the future. Our students— the direct beneficiaries of our commitment —deserve the powerful environment that building promises.
We Are Providing an Environment for Our Students to Grow & Excel
Our students come to school each day with purpose – prepared to be challenged and to work hard. It’s time our facilities complement their achievements. With your support, you are transforming our campus and enriching the educational experience not only for our current students, but also for those who attend our school for decades to come.
Research tells us that healthy, active bodies learn better. We have a responsibility to provide all our students with the tools to build their physical competence and confidence. And, guess what? Even with our limited space and resources we already do a lot!
Why an Athletic and Activity Centre?
Simply put – because our parents and our students asked for it. When we did our community survey as part of the Building on Success Strategic Plan it was the most-indicated need for the school.
While there is a gym at its core, actually it’s much more than an athletic centre. It will provide a much-needed home for our music program in two classrooms that can also be used as a single large gathering space. We will host performances and gatherings bringing us together in community. And it will also be a space that our Nanaimo community can utilize – starting in September 2020 with the VIU Mariners Volleyball Club!
How many families will you be asking for support?
Everyone! We would love to see 100% of the Aspengrove community – current families, staff members and alumni – make a gift in support of this our first permanent building. While not everyone will have the resources to make the same gift, we will truly appreciate each and every gift no matter how large or small.
When will it be done?
Our new building is complete and the students are enjoying its many benefits! While we didn’t know it at the time when planning this building, it could not have come at a better time in our history. With COVID, it has provided our students and faculty critical additional space.
How much should I give?
A campaign of this magnitude needs significant gifts, and requires support from the entire Aspengrove community. The amount you choose to give is a personal decision, and all gifts make a difference. Many families choose to pledge their gift over 3 to 5 years in order to make a more substantial gift than otherwise might be possible.
Naming Opportunities are spaces in the building that recognize families who have made a significant family commitment to our school. A plaque in place will recognize the gift and become a legacy for those individuals who have made this space possible for everyone.
I want to make a gift now
Thank you for supporting the construction of the new Athletic and Activity Centre

Other Ways to Give
While our current priority is the Athletic and Activity Centre, there are other opportunities where you can designate your funds to enrich our students’ experience: Scholarships & Bursaries, Music Program, Athletic Program
Many donors who make a large gift to the capital campaign choose to do so through a commitment to be paid over a 3 to 5 year period
Monthly donations are a convenient way to give, and can make a substantial impact over time. Donations are automatically withdrawn from your bank account or processed on your credit card every month.
Gifts can be made to honour a teacher or member of staff who has made a difference in your child’s life, or to honour a loved one who has passed away. Opportunities to recognize that person can be arranged.
Gift of Securities
Donating securities or mutual funds can be an excellent option for donors to make a significant gift while eliminating capital gains, especially in the case of highly appreciated securities. Charitable tax receipts are issued for the fair market value of the gift on the date the securities are delivered or transferred to Aspengrove School.
Gifts of Life Insurance
There are various options for gifts of life insurance, often with attractive benefits to the donor and the organization.
Gifts in Kind
Gifts-in-kind will be considered on an individual basis. For gifts valued at more than $1000, a third-party appraisal must be provided prior to a charitable receipt being issued.
Gift of School Bonds
Typically, bonds are returned when a student graduates. Some families, however, have chosen to donate back their bonds to be able to make a substantial gift to the school, and receive a charitable tax receipt now. There are options to donate back the bond in smaller increments through a multiple year pledge.
We would be pleased to meet with you to discuss options for giving. For more information, please contact:

Why do you need donations? Doesn’t tuition cover Aspengrove’s expenses?
Tuition covers salaries, daily operations, and general maintenance only. We aim to keep our tuition at a rate that offers greater accessibility to more families. We rely on philanthropy for improved programs, facilities, as well as scholarships and bursaries. All independent schools rely on philanthropy to secure permanent facilities.
Are there ways to maximize my tax savings?
All gifts will receive a charitable tax receipt, and there are some excellent ways to maximize your tax savings depending on your personal circumstances. It is best to consult your accountant or tax professional. Please also refer to the Ways to Give section on our website.
